About the Artist
Saul Lerma is a self-inspired, self-taught artist born in Texas of Spanish and German descent. He skilled himself as a young boy by sketching scenery of South Texas, Northern Colorado and Arizona, but eventually found his true medium in wood. In his travels with his family to places like Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and internationally, he discovered himself and the Lord. He currently resides with his loving wife Dee in Greeley, Colorado. She is not only his partner in life, but has been the most important supporter of his
creative talent.
Saul has found his strengths to be visions to be inspired by his love of Spanish and Native American culture and customs. Each piece has a rich history told by not only the wood but in the mission it portrays and together they weave a varied story of heritage and traditions.
Please take the time to focus not only on the piece in front of you but what it means to you and your life's story. Each one is a unique and original artwork, telling its own story, never to be duplicated.

Words from the Artist

" Young children often express their thoughts and feelings through play without other children for playmates and toys. I relied on my imagination and creativity when opportunities for free time arose, I would slip away to build roads for my plastic cars. I erected buildings and bridges with coffee cans and when the plastic cars fell apart, I built new ones with pieces of lumber and branches from trees. That imagination served me well when I became old enough to work in the cotton fields of west Texas and sugar beet fields of Colorado.
Some artistic treasures result from the innate, some from latent years of instruction and perhaps an element of luck. The creations in this display resulted from years of exploration and my artistic ability which has seasoned over time.
One of my esteemed mentors once said to me, "Artistry comes from feeling it and expressing it." This collection includes artistic expressions of my fond feelings for spanish missions of the southwest and western heritage captured in antique wood rescued from rural Weld County in Colorado. The various pieces in this collection represent my connection with the circle of life and the steadfast appreciation for my families across multiple generations. The pictures also hold reverence for God which I experience most intensely when visiting southwest missions."
